Cookie Cutters

I have drawers and drawers of cookie cutters.  I’m sure most bakers do.  It is how it’s done.  I have cookie cutters that were used by my grandma and all of my family as we made Christmas cookies, cookie cutters that were used to decorate gifts received and endless amounts of cookie cutters that I bought for one reason or another.  Mini ones, small ones, normal sized ones and enormous ones!  I have plastic ones and metal ones.  I even have metal ones that are coated and those are my favorite!

This week, I had two orders.  Both orders were for 1st Birthday parties, one a little boy and one a little girl.  The themes of their parties as different as day and night.

The first were little boxing gloves for a little guy named Jax.  Now, you’d think that somewhere in the expansive and vast internet I would be able to find a boxing glove cookie cutter….WRONG!  I searched local stores, numerous websites and even tried to make my own.  I was not able to pull it off.  My last resort was an idea that came to me while standing in our local baking store.  What if I bought a baseball glove smoothed out the fingers and then made it a bit longer by pulling it down.  I truly lucked out with this!  It worked.  It was not easy, but as soon as I made the first cut in the fresh, chilled dough I knew I was set.

My next order was for a sweet little girl, A’Ivory, and her mom ordered Minnie Mouse cookies for her party. The time had finally come as I had wanted to make Mickey or Minnie cookies for years.  Three years to be exact as my now husband gave me a Mickey Mouse cookie cutter from Disneyland when we first started dating.  He had taken a trip to California with his friend and thought about me while being a big kid at Disneyland and brought me back an official Mickey Mouse cookie cutter.  It was such a big deal for me because we had only been dating for three months at this point and while he was away, I realized that he was the one.  Whew!  Enough about that and back to these cookies.  I have been baking for little A’Ivory since before she was born.  I made the shower cake for her baby shower, white gown cookies for her blessing and dedication and now these cookies for her first birthday… Time surely flies!

I love my growing collection of cookie cutters.  While the drawers and drawers of them seem endless and sometimes I forget what I have (I have tried to catalog them and categorize them with a spreadsheet), it is fun to think back to the event that prompted me to purchase the cookie cutter, the cookies that were made with the cookie cutter or the sweet memories of baking with my grandma as a little girl.  You see, the baseball glove turned boxing glove will always remind me of little Jax and my Mickey Mouse cookie cutter will now hold a new memory of little A’Ivory turning 1.

Max and A’Ivory, I hope you two have wonderful birthday parties and that as you transition from babies into toddlers, you stay the cute, happy and healthy little kids that you are today!

Thank you all for trusting your baking needs to me and allowing me to share in your special events.  From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate your business and helping me grow with each order.
